Description
This Tanjore painting shows the divine wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva). In the Madurai tradition, Lord Vishnu gives away the bride, and he stands on the left in blue with a yellow dhoti. The green-skinned Meenakshi stands at the centre, and Sundareswarar stands on the right with a pink garland above his crown. A rich green tree stands behind them under a temple arch. The three figures are painted in natural colours, with embossed jewellery, detailed dhoti borders and gold foil accents, standing on a decorated platform. The tall portrait layout is framed under glass in a black wooden frame. It is an auspicious choice for a wedding gift or a pooja room, and for devotees of the Madurai Meenakshi temple. A handcrafted piece from Krishna Tanjore Art Gallery, T. Nagar.
